When you eat out, do you try to be cautious about how much you're spending? I do! For example, if I go out to eat 4 times a month, usually at least 2 of those times will be a happy hour. I know some great places that give special pricing on food and drinks. I also try to eat smart, even if a place isn't offering happy hour. This may include eating an appetizer. What are your thoughts? Any tips?

    Definitely!

    Some more tips to try:

Use Groupons or Living Social coupons to try out new restaurants at a reduced. Stock up on the coupons for any restaurants you frequent regularly
Save half of your dinner portion for your lunch the next day
Skip the drinks and opt for water instead
If it's the out-and-about portion that you enjoy, cook dinner at home and then go out for dessert after instead
Ask about frequent-diner programs that might get you a free dish after you eat a certain place a specified number of times

In college and in my single days, yes, absolutely, and happy hour was one of the best ways to do it. It was so much cheaper to go out for discount drinks and half price appetizers than full dinners with full price drinks. And it was always fun to start an evening at a bar or restaurant and then move to someone's house. Most of us were in favor of that lifestyle.

Now that I'm older and have kids though, saving on going out isn't as big of a priority. Going out is a luxury, and one we budget for. Once in a while I might use a coupon at a restaurant, and sure, I'll order a drink special over something full price, but generally speaking, I don't mind paying for the entire experience that a date provides. This is why we don't do it often, and allow ourselves this gift.
