I've been picking up frozen fruit at Dollar Tree, believe it or not. I don't remember how many ounces the packages are off hand, but the size is comparable to the little containers of fresh berries found in the produce section of the grocery store that often go for twice the price, if not more. The berries are cleaned, stems removed, and there is no sugar added. This is how I've managed to continue enjoying strawberries and blueberries when they're out of season. I do enjoy fresh ones, but we'll see what they prices look like and how often they go on sale. I've also bought frozen peaches there. Hope this helps.

It's very hard to buy healthy food, when crappy food is so much cheaper. Like, I had to explain to my friend (who doesn't buy her own food. We both live at home, but I have to pay for everything I use or eat myself.) that "I can buy 10 ramen or one apple". I personally try to eat as healthy as I can, but it is extremely hard.

Just try joining rewards things for stores. I've done that for several local supermarkets, and it saves me tons of money everytime I go food shopping. Also try keeping an eye on sales and seeing who takes coupons and such. :)

I don't think it's necessarily expensive to eat healthy, as vegetables aren't all that high priced and grains are too. However, just like with eating unhealthy, the processed or packaged products do tend to be a lot higher priced and it goes double for healthy packaged products, most probably because there's little demand for them so companies have to make much more per item than they would the indulgent type.

And there is another issue. Once you're adjusted to healthier foods, you will find an apple will keep you satisfied much longer than ramen. Real foods take care of you.. the garbage is made to make you hungrier. If you committed to eating healthier, you would find it is cheaper to eat healthy.. it's a matter of food choices and staying away from most packaged foods. As someone said above.. packaged foods are expensive and when a company claims it's healthy (which it never actually is) they feel they can hike the price. But we were talking eating healthy and those packaged foods don't fall in that category anyway, so no worries.

It's all about shopping around & whatever the new fad is. If something is fashionable avoid buy it. There's always something else around that can give you similar nutritional value. Comparison shopping & smart shopping can alter that opinion.

It is definitely more expensive to eat healthy than it is to eat junk food. Because junk food is a lot cheaper than buying fruits and vegetables it is a lot more tempting for a family on a limited income to buy more junk food. I try to buy things on sale and use coupons for non food items so that I will have more money to spend on nutritional things.

Eating healthy is probably the cheapest form of diet there is. I guess the reason why you find it expensive is because you're looking at fruits and vegetables that have demand therefore their prices naturally skyrocket. I suggest that you opt for those cheap and leafy greens because not only are their prices lower, they also provide the same vitamins that their expensive counterparts provide.

I don't really think that there are vegetable that provide more vitamins or are healthier than others. For me, they all provide the same amount of nutrition so I always buy what's cheap depending on the season.

Eating healthy is not affordable, and it is a shame... I often don't buy organic and natural stuff because sometimes they are more than double the price! Not to mention things like fruits and vegetables go bad very fast.

Ok, are people choosing between "unhealthy" processed foods vs "healthy" processed foods??? Because then the answers here would make sense to me. I find this nuts that people think a healthy diet is expensive. If you think "low fat" this and that and packaged low calorie that and this etc are healthy then, fine.. I agree with you.. but that's also not considered healthy at all. You're choosing between the same things.

Honestly, eating healthy does not have to expensive. Of course, if you will follow the fads in dieting, that will really be expensive or if you will go to fancy organic shops. But come to think of it, those are still made up of ingredients which are the same as the basic ones that you see in a regular supermarket, just without the fancy condiments.

Surprisingly, in my country, eating healthier food is far more affordable than unhealthy food. A typical meal at a fast food restaurant is far more costly than the price of food at a organic restaurant. Snacks aren't so excessively priced as well. Except for chocolate, like hersheys or snickers, I find it annoying that these things are so expensive. When people stop buying them they will lower their price.

Well I think it depends on where you live actually. I once lived in the countryside and my parents owned a farm and everything is very cheap to the point that neighbors would just hand us sacks of veggies and all other food they have harvested. I think the reason why most healthy food are expensive is because of how hard and expensive a certain food item is to produce, also throw in the expense of having it shipped to the market.

I usually do not mind eating unhealthy food. I know it is not good for health but I still prefer it over healthy food as they are very tasty. I totally love the taste. I think it is best if you understand what food suits you very well. Most of the time it will be junk food.

LOL.. yep.. most people will choose junk food. And most people feel as you do. YOLO!! lol. And pretty much all people who end up sick regret that. Well.. if they have a doctor that will admit food helped them get to where they are. Otherwise it's just pills for you. I know many who don't believe food did it and they happily slug back the pills with their big macs. Food kills massive numbers of people every day.. you can't take back death my friend.
