We also stock up on the staple foods, like rice and beans, and canned tomatoes and green veggies. I watch the sales and when something that will keep is on sale, then I stock up on it while the price is cheaper. We get all of our paper towels and toilet paper in bulk from Amazon, so I always have a big box of that in the storage room. One thing that I like that no one else has mentioned thus far, is sprouts. I like to make my own spreouts for salads, and just adding to a sandwich instead of lettuce. Sprouts store for a long time, and you can make a fresh batch in just a couple of days; so it is a good way to have greens if you are not able to buy and other green veggies. My favorite sprouts are fenugreek sprouts. They look similar to alfalfa sprouts; but they have a more flavorful taste and better texture.
I buy a lot of fruit and veg, pasta, rice, pasta sauces. etc We eat a lot of salads as well as pasta and rice. Sometimes I also get this readily marinated chicken that I just throw in the oven. Since it's just the two of us, it can end up making 3-4 meals
I do the same thing and stock up on things when they go on sale. Even though it drives my husband crazy I will stock up on soup, pasta, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, juice boxes. I feel great doing this as I know I'm saving so much money.
I've also taken to shopping at a wholesaler every two months or so, and stocking up on non-perishables like rice and pasta because it works out cheaper if I buy in bulk. I wish I could cut these out of my diet entirely, but I just can't. I instead opt to have a small portion of them.
The smart thing to stock up on are usually canned goods along with rice and any pasta's. The reason being is that you can pretty much make a variety of dishes with rice and pasta. Heck, some people love eating either with just a egg put on top with nothing else. I would stock up on some dry beans as well. Nothing like some good beans and rice to eat.
As I grow the majority of my own produce - its mainly only staples like rice, pasta, dried beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, various flours, oats and honey - that I stock up on - as so long as I have those in my store cupboard - I can generally provide a wide array of tasty, substantial, nutritious meals for very little cost. Oh and personal care products as well as paper products like toilet paper and kitchen towel - as apart from the fact that they're usually way cheaper when bought in bulk - I don't like to run out of them either.
