Living in apartments for the past 15 or so years, I've never had an enormous fridge, just a medium sized one at all the places I've lived. And honestly, I'm a huge ice cube nut, so like a third of my freezer is already taken up by ice cube trays. After that, I typically will buy a couple large packs of meat of some kind, such as a large pack of chicken breasts or thighs, maybe a large pack of ground beef, whatever - then I will portion everything off in individual portions so I can just grab them in the morning to thaw out so they will be ready when I get home from work in the evening. That takes up about another third. With the little space that's left, I always make sure I have a bag of frozen fries on hand, and a few bags of frozen veggies. By then, there's really no space left for anything else, such as make ahead meals. If I can get some deals on Lean Cuisine dinners, I will cram those in there too.
