Maybe they only look like that when dealing with you? Perhaps it's the "oh no a black person" face I now imagine you to be wearing all the time when dealing with folks outside your narrow comfort zone. / said the Black chick.
Most people that work at Walmart hate it and unfortunately tend to carry it over to the customers. You can usually tell the employees that enjoy their job because they're much nicer. I try to get my food shopping elsewhere but if I have to shop at Walmart, I try to go late at night to avoid the crowds because the patrons are just as rude. The rare times that I ask for help at night, I receive good service.
I know my way around my local Walmart pretty well, so I haven't run into the "asking for help" problem. If I see a fellow customer that looks lost, I point them in the right direction. I've been shopping there since it opened so I know where everything is. Since I don't depend on the staff that much, I don't notice whether they're helpful. The cashiers are nice , one of my daughter's teachers works there.
I agree with you. The older people have developed high social skills, they know that without clients, a company can't exist. The young ones don't really care about customers, the only thing that they care about is the money from the end of the month. So yes, whenever you have the chance ask an older staff member to help you out anytime.
Maybe it is grace with age? Since you mentioned shopping to eat, check out netgrocer.com if you are in the USA. They deliver to your door for a reasonable price.
I agree with the initial post. Most of the older staff at my local Walmart are very helpful. I could ask them any question and they more than likely have an answer. I think some young people who work at Walmart can be very rude when you ask them for help.
You hit the nail on the head with that one. WalMart treats its employees like CRAP for the most part. A lot of the people who work there only do so because there is no other job to go to (especially in this economy and hard-hit areas). Then there are the 'kids' - you've seen them, employees standing in the aisle and either chatting away with their friends or busy texting. They're strictly doing time. Most of the older employees grew up closer to a time when there was still a work ethic instilled in folks, and with maturity they have resigned themselves to just work while they can and not let it ruin their attitude. Pretty much nobody will stand up and proudly tell you "I work at WalMart".
