MSN had an article about a couple that remodeled their home by using stuff they bought off of Craigslist. The pictures are pretty amazing, they saved a ton of money and you sure couldn't tell that it was recycled materials. This seemed like a pretty good idea to me and I am going to have to start looking at Craigslist in a whole new way now. Has anyone else tried to do something similar or been able to do any projects by using Craigslist items?

Keep in mind that while Craigslist can give you huge savings, it can also give you huge problems. People seem to feel like they can scam you easier if it's online. That couch? It's got mold in it which you don't find out until a few weeks later. Things like that can happen.

I found some guys who helped me to landscape my backyard through Craigslist. They did an excellent job for a very reasonable price. It was a win-win for us and my wife was happy with the results, too.

Craigslist can be kind of a cesspool of scammers, but I did read a story about a guy who completely built a small eco-friendly house for himself out of items he got on Craigslist. I think it's terrific that people are so resourceful and can make good use of items that would otherwise be discarded.

I have found some really great deals on craigslist, and have sold a few thing there myself. Here where we are (rural Tennessee) a person could build a lot of things cheaply. The free section on our craigslist is always full of people giving away stuff like old barn lumber and tin.

I bought a nice looking refrigerator from craigslist. Unfortunately no matter what temperature I set it at, it always froze the food on the first two racks.

I agree to a certain point, towards your debate on this topic. Yes, Craigslist is actually becoming the main Head Honcho for Scammers, and yes they do think they can get away with it. And, the other part that I agree with you on, is the obvious factor of people posting items in the "free" section of Craigslist, aren't exactly the best or most "non-disaster" items. I say that with complete opinionated and factual information and experience in the past. But, I also have to admit that I have found some pretty neat things on Craigslist before, whether it was in the "free" section or any other section at that, so its a hit and miss kind of thing now days with that website, unfortunately.
Depending on what your looking for though, you can find some really cool things (mainly for projects or hobbies/interests) on the side of the road for big trash day, literally. I know a fellow enthusiast of wood working and reclaimed work, that gets nearly 85% of his stuff on the side of the roads, only during big trash days too! or if he see's something that is too good to pass up. And, for someone that pays nothing but gas and possibly $10 to someone to help him lift an item that's too big for two hands, I will say that he brings in over $50,000 every quarter year. Yes, $50,000 using your creative mind and skills that have been blessed upon yourself, the only trick is actually very simple, that being, use your skills and knowledge! nothing less and nothing more.
I hope this was kind of an inspirational or informative reply/post to any person that reads this, because everything I just said is 100% accurate and true, cheers.

Wow, that's amazing! I will def be looking at craigslist a lot different. It's kind of like the guy who traded up to all these amazing things and started with a paper clip.

You don't have to just look on Craiglist, I think this is just an inspiration for a starting point to look for inexpensive ways to remodel your home. As the article mentioned, if you live near a cabinet manufacturing company, they often have rejects they will sell off dirt cheap. You may not even need the part that is defective, or it might not be defective at all, just cut wrong for it's original destination.

Nick and dent items at furniture stores are also a great way to get a deal, especially if it is something you can fix easily.
