I was having a discussion at work today and come to find out, I'm the only one who doesn't know about storing bread in the fridge. Apparently this makes the bread last longer and stay fresh. I always imagined it to get hard or have that refrigerator taste when I take it out. Has anyone here done this before? I think I'll give it a try and see if it comes out okay.
Most workplaces I've worked at store their bread in the fridge. It definitely increases the life of the bread, but as far as I'm concern I don't want cold peanut butter sandwiches, so unless I'm making toast it would be out of the question for me. Bread doesn't seem to last long in this house anyway.
Yep, I sometimes keep mine in the fridge because it does stay fresh longer. I don't personally like it cold so I only do this for bread that's going to be turned into toast, etc. Otherwise, I leave it out of the fridge for a bit before making things like sandwiches.
I do this too! I feel like it does help make a difference in preventing spoilage. I am not too sure if it really does, but I choose to store it in the fridge once it has been sitting on the counter for too long. I hate seeing moldy bread, it makes me shudder on the thought that the bread is "dying". I am also a little concerned about mold getting onto my hands, it is something that makes cleaning my fridge out a little difficult. I have no more than one or two spoils every few months.
I usually don't have this problem as I'll go through a loaf of bread in a week or so. But I have heard that this does work pretty well, so I would give it a try. Especially if your bread is starting to get on the edge and you want to extend the usage you can get out of the bread. It doesn't make it all hard or anything, just cold. And if you don't like your bread being cold, maybe bring the bread out an hour or so before you plan to make a sandwich or something?
I store my bread in the fridge too ! I always have. Something that I learned from my mom I guess. I helps it to last much longer and it doesn't get moldy like bread sometimes left out too long does. I have never had any issues with it getting hard either. It always seems fresh and no one has ever complained about it so it must be ok. Actually, I buy a few loaves at a time and I put it in the freezer! It is perfect and when you take it out it's just like the day you bought it! We go through a lot of bread with 4 kids in the house so by doing this I normally don't run out. Hope this helps ! Danyel
I actually haven't done that before either, so you're not the only one! I'm willing to give it a try though, especially if it helps it last a little longer.
I have always kept my bread in the fridge since I can remember. When I was living alone I could not eat a loaf of bread before it went moldy unless I kept it in the fridge. Now I live with my best friend and her boyfriend and between us we eat the bread fast enough but keep it in the fridge to prevent the cats from eating it all. They are crazy about it and will tear the bread bags open and nibble on it if left out.
Yes I do that with my bread. It keeps them fresh and I don't mind the refrigerated taste that much since it's going to be in my toaster for the most part and the jam and all that other condiments would get rid of the taste.
I freeze my bread. I keep baking soda in the freezer, and it keeps most of the freezer smell away. If I happen to stumble on a good price for bread, I'll buy a few loaves and just take out one for the week. Sometimes, I'll buy a honey multigrain bread or something else with a sweet taste. I don't like that kind of bread for sandwiches, and eat less of it. In that case, a few slices can go directly to the toaster.
I actually store my bread in the freezer. I get fresh baked loaves from my local grocer and if I don't keep them cold they grow mold or get stale within 4-5 days. Since I'm the only one who eats bread in my household, I slice it up and put it in the freezer. Any time I want some I just throw it in the toaster. I like not having to waste any and not feeling like I have to eat it quickly before it goes bad.
In my experience the best way to store bread is in a cotton bread bag. If you put it in the fridge, it is likely to develop mould long before you actually see it. Also, it's not the best idea to keep it in plastic bags. It needs to have some air flow to stay fresh. That's, of course, if you don't live in a very humid climate.
I usually split my loaf and put half in the fridge and keep a few slices out so I can have a sandwich, that way it keeps the bread longer and I can choose whether to have toast or not. Bread goes off faster than you may think, so unless you are in a household that eats a lot I would split the loaf up. I do freeze it sometimes, if I know I won't be eating much, but frozen bread doesn't taste the same and is only really good for toast.
