It is wise to soak the vegetables in water for 5 to 10 m8nutes before washing. Aside from assurance that the vegetables are cleansed well, you also save water and the effort to remove excessive dirt. Even tomatoes, we soak it and rinse it. We are sure that it has no dirt anymore.
That is a good point and idea. I always seem to just wash them right away and well I tend to scrub them well and make sure they are clean. Soaking them with soften the dirt up making it easier and faster to wash them. Thank you for the tip.
Always soak or at least rinse vegetable if you cook them or eat them raw. You just don't know who has handled them and where they have been stored. This is how the e-coli scares happened. Better safe than sorry, and it in doubt cook the veggies or peel the outer skins if they are items such as carrots or potatoes.
A lot of people unfortunately look past this step which results in them consuming a large amount of chemicals and other things.
I don't know how to cook, so I will relay this to my dad. He doesn't soak the vegetables though, he just washes them briefly then proceeds to cook them, I guess it's enough to clean them.
Soaking vegetables before washing sounds like a great strategy. There is a higher chance of getting rid of more if not all pesticide, germs or dirt that may be within it. That way you will have an easier and faster time washing them, getting rid of anything that remains, saving a little bit of cash and saving yourself from any harmful germs.
Learned something here and I'll do it for in Hawaii we had a rash of diseases from not cleaning your veggies good. Rat lung-worm disease is deadly too that has erupted in Hawaii along with norovirus from a restaurant in Waikiki too. The restaurant has cleaned up quite a bit and is reopened. Got to be careful when you're eating fresh veggies and fruits to clean them very well like soaking them in water for a while before you clean and eat them. The water can be used to give to your lawn too after soaking your veggies and fruits to save money.
I totally agree with this. Soaking your vegetables in water before washing will get rid of all the ingrained dirt and any harmful chemicals. This ensures you are eating healthy and uncontaminated fruits. Another thing to also consider is the washing of hands before and after rinsing the vegetables to avoid transference or spreading of germs and dirt.
Most of the vegetables that we have in the stores here have already been cleaned, and I seldom soak anything, and just rinse it off. Potatoes are the main thing that really needs much washing, and those I usually clean with the little scrub brush. I have read that we (humans) do not have as good of resistance to things like e-coli as people did in the past. I remember that back in the 1950’s-1960’s, all restaurants would serve you steak any way you wanted it cooked, and hamburgers also, and there were nowhere near the sanitation rules for food service that we have now days, and seldom, if ever, was there any cases of people getting sick from food that we ate. Now, they have all of the regulations for food handlers both in stores and in restaurants, and people are still getting sick from eating food that was not handled properly.
