Smoothies are something relatively new here in Portugal. From what I just realized it's 100% fruit so it's a great deal for those that can't drink milk or simply want to have an easy piece of fruit. Are you smoothies fan? Is it really as they say, 100% fruit?
No way! Throw everything in! It's a great way to get your greens too, if you're not a fan. There's not much I won't throw into a smoothie lol (as long as it's whole, REAL foods). the possibilities are so endless you could probably have a different smoothie every day for the rest of your life lol
I see you're a smoothie pro JosieP, you do them yourself? How do you do them? I think it's a great thing that could replace some unhealthy things I eat in the middle of the morning for example, I just wonder what their price will be...
I'm a smoothie fan, but I like a good amount of sugar in it and sometimes even condensed milk, so I wouldn't say I like it for health reasons. My favorite one is mango, probably with watermelon and melon being a close second. I find it interesting that it's a new thing in your country by the way, I guess I just always assumed crush fruit shakes were internationally known and adapted like bread. Anyway, at least you did get to try it, I think it's one of the best things in the world and I always drink some on a hot day or even when shopping.
Well, as I mentioned on here somewhere.. what I spend in a month on food now, is a lot less than it used to be when I wasn't eating real foods. People look at price tags, but I look at it added up like that and that's when you see the savings. Depends on your idea of health though too. There's no secrets to it.. just throw in you favourite fruits for sweetness or add something like honey or maple syrup if you need a sweeter kick.. then start tossing stuff in there lol. There are some greens I want, but don't prefer, so that's how I get them in.. fruits will mask the flavour of some and others not so much, but I get through it lol. I also use a blender, because juicers take out the fiber. The ninja is wicked.. I hate regular blenders.. since my ninja died and I'm too lazy to grab another one, I've been fighting every day with my blender (because I also make "puddings" with these foods and it doesn't seem to like the thickness). You'll get to know what you like as you play around with it. It's such a good way to get what you need in your diet without feeling it's all your eating all day.
I don't have a blender, I'll need to invest in one... Thanks for the tips Josie, nothing like a home-made smoothie I imagine. I was checking the supermarket yesterday and we have no smoothies for sale, just stuff with milk, pretty (un)impressive... Ripley, no sugar or condensed milk, that's cheating!
Don't buy your smoothies silly lol. They'll always sneak stuff in there that you shouldn't be eating. Doing it yourself will ensure you know exactly what's in them. But then, I'm not just eating healthy, I'm eating CLEAN and healthy and you won't find that in a grocery store. Processed is out for me too.. not clean.. ick. If you're not as anal as I am, making smoothies will be a lot easier than I'll ever make it out to be lol. And I highly recommend the ninja. Not the newer ones, but the set.. it comes with different sized containers and the motor fits on each one. The blades come out for easy cleaning and it makes getting every last drop of the food out of them a breeze.. something that drives me bonkers with regular blenders.. I practically have to mutilate my hands to get all of it out if whatever I made is on the thicker side. Best thing I've used so far.
I can't guarantee that the smoothies being sold in the malls are 100% fruit, but if you make your own smoothie using pure ingredients, then that's the only time that you can be sure that it is 100% pure. Over here we make banana smoothies all the time.
I like smoothies as well, my favourite blend is the simple strawberry and banana. My boyfriend makes smoothies with fruits and he adds in nuts and spinach! At first I was a little skeptical about trying it, but when I did, it tasted amazing and he made it so that you get high doses of the daily vitamins and minerals. Smoothies are a wonderful invention!
Something I've done to boost the veggie count in the smoothies is to make some veggie/fruit juice (if you have a juicer) ahead of time, and then either use this liquid to smooth out your smoothie, or make the liquid into ice in a cube tray so that you can just toss them into your smoothie mixture before you blend. Neither of those methods will thin your smoothie out, and they just add more nutrients!
I like my fruit and yogurt smoothies, it is a great way to use up fruit before it has to be thrown out. I also use chocolate soy milk to give me that chocolate fix I need without eating more sweets.
I'd guess you will change your tune when you try it, especially the condensed milk. But yeah, it is cheating. Ideally, it's best if the fruits are sweet enough on their own, but condensed milk is just so good I'd probably still put it in anyway lol. Like I said, I don't drink it for health reasons.
I love smoothies. I usually love to drink them in the summertime on a hot day. I used to enjoy doing that when I was in college since there was a place close by that sold AMAZING smoothies.
I thought smoothies always had yogurt in them? At least the ones I've had always had it in it. I believe in India, there is a very similar drink called Lassi, which is something like Yogurt and Mango blended together. We had a multi cultural holiday party at a company I worked for and some of my coworkers made this for everyone - it was fantastic, a little more liquidy than a traditional smoothie, but that might have been because it melted a bit before I got some.
I prefer to make my own smoothie. Although sometimes I buy in the mall but I make sure that they have the ingredients all natural. It's hard to really trust food outside these days so it's best to be extra careful.
Ohiotom76 I love lassis. The only one I've ever had, though (at Indian restaurants) is mango. They are like smoothies, but only use yogurt and fruit I think. I like smoothies, but I don't like bananas. Any quick recipes without bananas?
