Do you buy pre-popped popcorn or pop it yourself at home? What about seasonings? Do you make those yourself or buy them pre-packed, if you pop it yourself at home?

I prefer to pop it myself at home due to food allergies so that I can control what goes into and onto it. It's also a lot cheaper to pop it at home as you can buy loads of corn kernels for the same price you can buy one bag of pre-popped popcorn. I also prefer to make the seasonings myself.

In the olden days, we buy unpopped corn in small packs. We would use the metal pot to make popcorn. A spoon of butter and half a cup of corn in that metal pot that we would shake (with the lid on, of course) over the stove. It's nice to hear the popping corn. But that was a tedious way of having popcorn. When the microwave popcorn came to fore, I had tested it but it's not really that good. Sometimes the popcorn is raw or did not pop and sometimes it is burned to bitterness. But now there are packs of popcorn in the supermarket with a variety of flavor. And they are real pop corns, so nice to eat while watching tv.

I just buy microwave popcorn and sometimes I would buy packaged premade popcorn but I'd say I buy microwaved popcorn a lot more frequently. I don't eat a lot of pop corn myself so I mostly just buy it for the kids and they seem to like the microwaved version just fine although I have to say that I tasted it once and found it to be too greasy and almost unedible in the way that it felt so much like there was so many chemicals and bad stuff on there. I'm now thinking of just buying gourmet type premade pop corn from the grocery instead because I think the extra cost would be worth it.

I not only pop up my pop corn b8ut also grow my own corn. I have a small piece of land where I grow cereal and vegetables. About 90 percent of food I consume is produced in my farmland. I use local variety of seeds and grow organically. I of course buy pop corn in the market, however, this is just once in a blue moon.

I like the microwave popcorn sold at Costco, it's the Kirkland brand. It's a lot like movie theatre popcorn. I've done popcorn sales at my school to raise money and have tried many kinds of microwaveable popcorns and this is by far the best tasting and the least amount of waste in the bag. Sometimes when you make it in the microwave you get a lot of unpopped kernels. That being said I like to buy the flavourings at the grocery store and it on top. My kids like the dill pickle topping.

I remember Jiffy Pop which I found recently at Safeway and loved it as I was growing up. I buy pre-popped popcorn from CVS. It's on sale now 9 oz. for just $1. Our microwave finally broke so upon getting a new one through the mail which didn't work that we got a refund for we are now doing without a microwave oven. We like the pre-popped popcorn and it's inexpensive just 1.29 regular price.

    :rolleyes:Popcorn pkg. size is 5 oz, not 9 oz...sorry.

I usually use microwave popcorn from the store, but I have also experimented with making popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave. It turns out pretty well, and is cheaper and better for you as it doesn't have all the chemicals associated with commercial microwave popcorn. So, it is a popcorn that is very affordable and also tasty.

I pop it myself. I used to buy microwave popcorn for the household, but I had to stop because it was too expensive compared to buying a couple of large bags of popcorn and doing it yourself. I'm also pretty surprised that my kids actually enjoy making the popcorn on the stove.

We're growing a small patch of corn this year. This is our first year growing corn, so we decided to grow the mini popcorn variety. Last Friday my daughter harvested a few ears and I can't tell you how excited we are about growing our own corn. So many people told me that growing corn would be really hard and that I shouldn't waste my time growing it, so I decided to try it out on a small scale and because it was a success, I can't wait to expand on it and grow a lot more next year, but first I can't wait to taste our home grown popcorn! Happy gardening to you!

I grow the herbs that I use as seasoning on some of the popcorn I make and I think that's a great way to help keep costs down. Some of the more expensive popcorn that has seasonings on it can be so much more expensive that it's just not worth it in my opinion. But buying plain, or popping it myself, and adding a few herbs to it can make a huge difference to the flavour. Especially knowing it's home-grown seasoning!

Definitely pop it ourselves, either on the stove (with no added fats) or in the air popper. We make our own toppings too, to keep it healthy. That pre-popped stuff is scary lol

I pop mine myself, one becasue its healthier, two because my husband doesn't like popcorn and I can never finish a bag. I just use a cast iron skillet right now for popping but I am wanting to get a stove top popcorn popper thing.

I rarely purchase popcorn therefore I don't see the need for a popcorn making machine. But it would be prudent to buy one if you are a frequent consumer of the same or you sell them to others. Otherwise, it would be prudent to lease the same from someone else if you are not at a position to purchase one as this would translate into savings compared to buying popped corn.

I definitely pop my own whenever the craving calls! I remember reading health reviews about the dangers of the chemicals from the microwave bags and stopped eating them. I feel like doing it this way also reduces waste, and it is fun to experiment with the different flavors. I am trying to reduce sodium intake, so I use freshly ground black pepper quite a bit, and on occasion, cayenne to really spice things up. After a while you do not even miss the butter.

This also makes for a fun in-home activity, especially if you have guests who have never popped their own corn on a stove top before. Air pop machines are fantastic tools as well, if you have the space for them.

For sweets cravings, once in a while I will melt down some marshmallows and throw some chocolate chips in the mix.

I like popcorn, but not enough to keep any at home. So no, I don't make my own. I do know that as with most things, it tastes a lot better freshly made. Plus it's a lot cheaper, but I always wait until I'm craving it and just pick it up from my local supermarket. I tend to go for the caramel flavour or just plain (salted). After that I go ages without eating it until I crave it again.

I am thinking about buying an air popper because I do not like all of the chemicals that they use in the "butter" for the popcorn. The fat droplets get stuck in your lungs and can make you sick. I am surprised that they haven't had a class action lawsuit about this issue.

I don't buy them at all, since I'm not very fond of them. They taste bland, and even with powdered flavor on them, they still don't appeal to me. I remember eating some homemade popcorn that was given to us ages ago, and boy it tasted so bland!
