You may not believe me but the metal detecting apps for Android are real! I just downloaded the app "Metal Detector" for free at the Google Play Store. At first I thought it was fake. The app shows numbers and a graph. The numbers are supposed to increase of a metal is near. I tried to go near some metals and the numbers increased. When I went away from a metal, the numbers would decrease. I'm not sure if it works on all phones though. I'm currently using a Note 2.
