A lot of the vanilla flavoring you can buy at the store isn't really vanilla extract at all; it's vanillin, an artificial flavoring made from wood chips. Real vanilla extract tastes even better, but can sometimes be expensive. However, it's easy to make your own. All you need is vanilla beans, vodka (or rum, or bourbon, or...), and a dark glass bottle to put it in. Everything you need to know is here:

I make my own extract and enjoy it. I usually take out the beans after six months and use only the first extract. I use the next extract for perfuming our home. I love the smell of vanilla and love to be surrounded by it.

Of course it's not vanilla extract, that's why it's called vanilla flavouring and not vanilla extract ;).

Making your own is a good idea but I suppose you would need a very large amount of vanilla pods and they are expensive.

I love vanilla. There is no better smell. I know that it is very expensive, but hey you could make the vanilla flavoring, and have something to make your home smell better. I always have vanilla extract at my home, and would love eventually to try it myself. Vanilla is good for so many things! Thanks for the information.

I would love to learn how to make my own vanilla extract! It's so expensive and right now I only have some vanilla flavoring in my cupboards. I thought I was buying extract all of these years, but I was so wrong! You can definitely taste the difference too. Thanks for this!

I absolutely love vanilla. I'll probably try planting some of my own and trying this method out as well. I'm not sure where I would use it as of now, but I'm sure I'll find some nice recipes. Thanks for sharing this! I'm going to try it out and hopefully come back with a report. :)

I wouldn't even know where to find real vanilla beans. They don't sell them at any supermarket near me. But otherwise that sounds like an awesome idea, provided it's not too expensive.

Believe it or not, I bought my vanilla beans on eBay! I bought a quarter pound of them and made hmm... I think it was nearly two liters of vanilla extract. It was worth it because we do a lot of baking.

Yep, the bottle I have here says Vanilla Extract.. and the fine print says otherwise. Even knowing that, I keep meaning to make my own and never get started. I can't wait to remember lol.

Most vanilla extract if filled out with lots of sugar. You really want to go for a vanilla extra with a high vanilla %. I tried making my own, I bought some vanilla pods from a popular vanilla bean company which sells Madagascan vanilla at discounted prices. I purchased 30 pods but that wasn't enough to fill a small jar.

Thank you for the tip, I might try this one day, since right now I don't know where I can buy vanilla beans.

What a great idea! I am a gardener and I have been procrastinating about making extracts for my herbs. I love doing projects so I might try this one. By the way, I never heard of Instructables, so I might check that out. This also sounds like a great way to make perfumes.
