Do you ever make your own subs? For what it costs to go out for submarine sandwiches like Subway, you can make a lot of sandwiches at home. Since I usually already have some of the ingredients on hand, it's a pretty good value for me. It's also a nice change sometimes during the summer, instead of having a hot meal. I just purchased bakery bread on sale, so I thought I'd make a sub for lunch. Mmmm.
Sometimes, but as far as saving money - that's not always the case, depending on the cost of the lunch meats and cheeses you are using. DiBella's Subs for example puts a ton of meat and cheese on their subs, I can barely finish a large sub from there, and usually don't - I often save half of it for another day. They put like at least a half a pound of meat on their subs and several slices of cheese. If I were to buy that much at the grocery store, along with the bread and veggies, it would probably cost me a bit more actually. However if you can score some deals on the bread, meat and cheeses (or go all veggie), you can sometimes come out ahead. For example, I got two huge loaves of french bread at Walmart yesterday, easily enough to make six or eight large sub sandwiches, for only $2. I can get some bulk packs of meat such as salami at Save-A-Lot for about $5. GFS (Gordon Food Service) also sells meats and cheeses at good prices (in bulk though) and I can get 2 lbs of provlone there for $4. So for about $11 I could make about 6 or so subs. I would just have to be careful not to pile on too many other ingredients which will up the cost.
You have a good deal there. Subway gives you a big piece of bread with some paper thin meat. I can save a bundle by making subs at home. More like your latter description. It goes without saying that the deals make the difference. When I find good offers is when I decide to make them. I have a store nearby where I get exceptionally good meats and cheeses for a great price. I often get the French bread from Walmart when it's on sale. Good stuff.
My husband used to be fond of sandwiches for the afternoon snack. But now his taste turned to native foods. His usual fare now is friend sweet potato or fried banana and sometimes some native delicacies made from glutinous rice. For sandwiches, we just rely on Subway. In fact, we would be going to the movie tonight and I'm sure we would drop by Subway before getting inside the theater.
I'm not really sure what to say about this, to be completely honest with you. The materials itself can cost you more than if you bought from Subway or any other fast-food chains. Well, at least where I live, this isn't even slightly applicable.
I don't, but I don't eat bread. When I used to go to Subway sometimes, the number of things I wanted on the sub would make it probably not that much cheaper to make it myself, not to mention that I would have to commit to eating one every day for several days in order to not waste food because it's impossible to buy so little of each thing. I think it would be a good idea if you are making them for your whole family, since then you would not have trouble finishing all the ingredients before they spoil.
That makes sense. Yes, I was thinking more in terms of making, as opposed to buying, sandwiches for the whole family. I guess if someone were to take a lunch though, it might work out for them. I guess it also depends on the area, since for some folks the ingredients are apparently very expensive. I can probably make twice as much by volume for less money. It's definitely a better deal for me, and my sandwiches are nicer. lol
Subway & Jimmy John's & Quizno's are not my cup of tea. I'd prefer to make a sandwich from scratch at home than go to any of these places. I think my family feels the same. Not to sound pretentious about my sandwiches but they are the SHEEEEEEEEETS & PILLOWS.
If I'm going to work then I will make my own. Like you said, it just costs so much less if you do that. The amount of sandwiches you are able to make with all the ingredients is so much more. I mean you just can't beat it. My boyfriend would go out and buy sandwiches everyday last summer while he was working, and he spent a ton of money. He won't do it anymore because he knows that it costs a lot.
I'd love to sometimes, but I somehow can never find that bread. Anyway, it may not save you money. It depends really. If you're buying the ingredients and making the sandwiches regularly instead of going to the store, you're definitely saving yourself some money. However, if you're just buying all those ingredients for just a one-off sandwich, you're probably better off buying it from subway anyway. Subway is definitely my favorite fast food chain though, so I don't mind spending a little money on those sandwiches once in a while.
I hardly buy sub sandwiches from restaurants anymore. Lately I purchase all the ingredients that My family and I like and we make our own. It's cheaper to me because I can still use the ingredients to make sandwiches for another time.
I've done a few times. We have a nice bakery near by and I'll go get fresh sub buns and some deli meats and make subs at home. It's not that hard but just a lot of prep work. I like a lot of veggies in my subs so in addition to the mayo, mustard, deli meats I'll add sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, red onions to my sub. If I've got it on had some bacon, sliced cheese as well. Once you add all this up it is coming close to what you pay at Subway. I find deli meat can get quite expensive too. I like to buy it at Costco to save money.
I used to but nowadays we usually stock other types of food items instead. The best part of making your own subs was that you could control how much ingredients go in and also it doesn't end up costing as much. I think the slight that I'd say that would make just buying one a bit more preferable is the sauce, since that is hard to duplicate at home. Also, it's much less work to just buy it obviously, but considering the savings you get I don't think it's that much of a chore.
I went right off Subway and have since realised I can make way better sandwiches/subs. I just ensure that i'm fully stocked with all the necessary and (my) favourite fillers, and really it's not that difficult. Plus I can be as creative as I like, with all that flexibility and freedom
I guess it all comes down to personal taste? I prefer to make my own sub sandwiches. It's fun to make and I always like to get creative with meats and vegetable toppings. If I ever buy sub sandwiches, it's either from Stop and Shop and/or Shoprite in my city because their subs are really good and reasonably priced. I do like Subway, but they're usually a hit or miss with how they make their subs.
I agree with you about making subs at home saves money. You can make custom subs that are good and you know good for you just made them. It's not soggy nor sloshed with things you don't usually put on your subs. Home made subs saves money and you can eat as many as you want!
