Since the keylogger that I have on the pc is still there after being detected by 2 softwares and I had it "removed", I think Deep Freeze will be able to secure the pc after I reformat it. But I'd like to know if you know of a free alternative to this software? Because they only offer a 30-day trial. Any suggestions are welcome!
I do not know what Deep Freeze software is to be honest but a google search came up with a site called keoskea that has a free download of the latest version. it says shareware so I don't know how safe it is but you could probably do some research and searches to find out if it is legitimate or not.
At the time Deep Freeze upgraded their software and made it commercial, my computer was left unprotected for a little while. But after looking around, I got different software which worked almost as well that I used for a little while. The software is called Returnil. Log InThey have a free and paid version. So get the free version test it and if you like it . . .
I don't think so any free software able to work as good as Deep Freeze. Go for it. Upgrade it with latest version. I'm using it from last 5 years. Worth to spend few bucks on this kind of software.
@ Micheleteresa, I saw that link too, but I assumed it's the same installer found in the creator's website. Oh well, I will give it a try to see if my suspicion was right. @ Denis, do I have to learn how to make a virtual drive to be able to use Returnil? Or when I install it will do the work for me? Because "sandbox" seems to refer to virtual machines when I research about it, and I am clueless about virtual machines. @ Rupert, well if money isn't a problem, then I would have no problem buying it, lol.
No. There's no need to create a virtual drive . All you do is click a button ["Virtual Mode"] and you are done. Or if you prefer something even simpler that works just as well then I'd recommend Sandboxie. It doesn't work like Deep Freeze though. Log InYou don't have to create a virtual drive with this software either. Once you install the software you can choose to run any program sand-boxed [that is, in the Sandboxie virtual sandbox environment]. It's also a really good program and unlike Returnil it won't slow down your computer.
Ah so do you think if I download Sandboxie or Returnil now my browsing activity can now be hidden from the pesky keylogger that's in our pc? Or I should really take time to reformat the pc first? Because you said that those 2 are different from Deep Freeze, so I wonder if they're immune to keyloggers.
No. Since the keylogger already is in your system, it will still record keystrokes, etc, etc. The software doesn't encrypt your activity. It merely protects you from more malware, viruses, etc which you might unwittingly install on your PC. When using sandboxie for example, you'll be working in a virtual sandbox. Nothing will be saved on your PC once you delete the contents of the virtual sandbox.
Why wouldn't you just consider purchasing a full license to Deep Freeze? It's 10 days later, and you've spent more than a couple hours on finding a free alternative, it seems. That means you've spent about $16, in theory, just looking for an alternative (at an $8 minimum wage, time-as-money situation). It's a $45 piece of software, which is an exceptionally small price to pay for a program that you already know with an interface that you like and performance you can depend on. It's as simple as that.
@ Denis, thank you for clarifying that, I will check those 2 software out once the pc is formatted already. @ Troutski, the software that I'm considering buying is Spy Shelter, since there is a lack of keygens for this one on the net. And you know what, the computer technician that I talked to to reformat my pc also has Deep Freeze, and he can install it too in our pc. I guess if I look around the pirated cd market in here, then I will be able to find one as well. Hurray for savings, lol.
@JamesHanson, Thanks! I will try that one. I hope it has low memory usage like Deep Freeze. (I finally got a copy of Deep Freeze)
I haven't heard of the software either but I'll most certainly take a look. Since I'll be replacing my old machine and will most obviously be forced to spend some cash to get Deep Freeze if there's a free alternative that works as well, why not try it out first? Thanks for sharing, James.
You may use Spybot search N destroy. Extremely effective and useful. Best part is it's free completely. It will eliminate trojans, keyloggers, worms, tracking cookies and other spyware from windows registry, cache and from other sensitive areas too.
@bonzer, Unfortunately, at that time, Spybot wasn't able to detect it. Spy Reveal and Spy Shelter were the only ones that were able to detect the keylogger.
