I have a 2003 Mazda Tribute and before this, had never heard of an ignition coil. I believe that that problem is they are becoming too hot and then become defective. When they do, my car acts like it has a transmission problem. I've had 3 replaced in the last 2 years (and I've only had the car since early 2010). The mechanic told me that because the car is a "Ford base" that this is just going to continue to happen. I was curious if anyone else's car has this problem, and if there is any possible way to slow or stop the damage to the coils. Thanks!
An ignition coil basically takes a small amount of power and magnifies it so that it can be used in the spark plug - and the reason they go bad is normally that they're worn out. The solution to the problem is normally replacing the cap and rotor. Anyway, not doing this action can cost a lot of lost time where your car isn't moving, and that can be expensive.
