We don't spend any money on it at all, actually. My husband grew up with some petty bad gut issues (ignored his triggers, so they only got worse over the years; they're easily set off now). Alcohol is HORRIBLE for people with gut issues. Not something you want to risk, so once I knew the seriousness of it, we cut it out completely. I might have a drink at a gathering if I'm offered, but otherwise, it's not something we spend money on anymore.
Virtually nothing at all - even allowing for the fact that we do keep a stock of good wine for visitors - as because both I and my husband rarely ever drink alcohol - other than an occasional glass of good quality wine once in a blue moon - meaning perhaps New Year' Eve or a special anniversary if we have visitors - as this is not something that happens every year - its not all unusual for us not to buy any alcohol for many years in a row.
Hehe your household sounds like mine, @DreekLass! In fact, we have this wine that my cousin left here when she came to visit last June. We've not touched it, and she can have it next time she comes around. She's a big wine lover and I know she'll be very shocked to find it still intact LOL Often when we feel like wine, my husband and I can't even finish a bottle of wine between us, so it goes to waste because we end up having to put the rest down the drain! I wish we had those little miniature wine bottles I used to get from Marks and Spencer and Sainsbury's. That used to work great for us
We try and drink responsibly, mostly on weekends, birthdays, special events. When we were younger we used to go out to bars and drink and now we realize that it is so much cheaper to have that drink at home. We rarely drink when we go out to eat as that really adds to the cost of a meal. My husband is a beer drinker and I like red wine. We have discovered that beer in Quebec is much cheaper than in Ontario, so we live 25 minutes from Quebec, we'll drive to the Costco in Quebec to get cheaper beer and wine.
I don't drink because I don't think it's a good value for money. Soda and chocolate milk taste a lot better than beer and they cost less. I'll occasionally have beer, wine or sangria around Christmas but that's one week out of the year, so the amount of money is minimal and doesn't affect my budget the rest of the year. Daniel Tosh had it right when he told a kid that even lemonade tastes better than the best liquor. Alcohol is not yummy unless you add a bunch of stuff to it.
We do not drink a lot in our home and we rarely ever go to the bar for drinks. I spend about $15 a week on wine that we consume at home. It is better to have a drink in a safe environment than to spend the money and drive somewhere where booze is much more expensive and you have to drive to get back home.
