This happened when I was much younger and knew nothing about cars, and I still am not mechanically oriented. Anyway I stopped in a Hess station for gas, which was under a dollar then, and for fluids. Now I knew that an automatic transmission needed fluid, a power steering unit needed it, and the brakes did too. So I asked the attendant to get me one of each, which he did. It was all the same stuff-- automatic transmission fluid. I did not know any better. Now back then it was OK to put ATF in the power steering unit, but definitely not in the brakes. I wound up with a big bill for a master cylinder for the brakes. My mother made the excuse for him that he was busy but it was just plain incompetence.
