I've made it a practice to be vigilant when the cashier scans the products. What usually happens is they scan it more than once and I end up paying for extra items that are not in my grocery bags when I get home. I always end up giving myself a sermon whenever I rush through the process and did not pay attention. Sometimes when I start unpacking the bags I'd realize that an item or two are missing but when I check my receipt I paid for it. I also keep an eye on everything that they place or don't place in the bags. I guess when they rush things they sometimes forget to place little items in.

I actually hate those rotating bag stands that the cashiers use at Walmart because I have left items behind a couple of times since they were in one of the bags on the carousel thingy and I couldn't see them.
The rotating bag stands are easier for the cashier, but if they start bagging the next customer's stuff while some of your bags are still on the little carousel, your stuff can get mixed up with someone else's stuff.

At my local Pathmark, the cashiers don't bag anyone's stuff. You bag your own stuff. If you screw up or leave something behind, it's your own fault in that system.

In all fairness I don't think it's necessarily the cashier's mistake. They are simply scanning the items. The prices themselves are stored in databases and automatically updated by other employees. If whomever is placing the flyers and advertising isn't getting all the corresponding prices correct with their item codes, they are really the ones to blame for that happening. I wouldn't expect a cashier to know the prices of everything in the store off the tops of their heads, and price tags are no longer really placed on items these days.
