I live in an apartment so I unfortunately don't have much space to put up a garden. I did once get curious bout it and looked up some methods on making indoor gardens though but it turns out I'll probably use too much electricity which is very expensive here so it wouldn't be worth it even if I did get free vegetables out of it. I guess the most I could do is to just grow some small plants like herbs or tomatoes and I do plan on getting into that soon.
My husband is a weekend gardener for that purpose - he wants to harvest what he wants to eat. He likes banana so he bought a planting material of imported Thailand variety which he had already made 3 harvests. We have lemon and lime around the house together with mint, local spinach, ginger, and other edibles. His latest baby is the grape vine that he expects to give fruit within this year. We also have a big mango tree that gives us more than 500 fruits in one season. Unfortunately it was felled by a typhoon 2 years ago. It's still alive though but with only few branches.
Where I am now there is no space for a garden. However, the trend has always been that people who are able to plant fruit or vegetables at home would always share with their neighbours. Even the folks that may have a farm out in the country will probably give some of this stuff which they had reaped, to neighbours who they have a friendly relationship with.
We always receive fruits and vegetables from our relatives in the province. You see, these fruits and vegetables grow naturally in there. They don't even have to plant them, it's just there. I love the mangoes from there, it's sweet and very large. Yum! Other fruits they have are bananas and these little berry-like ones I don't know what they're called. Lol. But they're equally sweet and delicious. With vegetables, we get a variety. They always give us okra, beans, potatoes and squash whenever they visit us here. We'd make different dishes out of them. They're very delicious and crunchy as well. They are in huge sizes as well as compared to vegetables in the city. They also give us fishes and other seafoods. They live near the sea so these are almost free. I love the shrimps because they're huge and juicy. They give is a variety of fishes too which we cook with soup or just fry, either way they are delicious. We don't really give them our produce because they don't need it. They have an abundance of such produce in the province.
My parents, brother, sister and I all plant a large garden every year (Oh, I can't wait until the tomatoes start ripening) and we all share in the bounty. Last year, we had an abundance of green beans, cucumbers, corn and tomatoes and we gave them away to anyone we knew that wanted them. My brother took several large bags of vegetables to his place of work and distributed them to his coworkers. We enjoy sharing with others and we know there are many people who can't have a garden because of where they live. There's nothing that tastes better than fresh, home grown vegetables and my family and I were glad that we were able to share with so many people. We hope that our garden this year does as good as it did last year so that we have plenty to give to others who aren't able to grow their own tasty vegetables.
