That's a really solid way to stay in touch with your family. Unfortunately for me, my brother, and my parents, we all live in different cities and are only able to get together a few times, if that, a year. But every time we do, we like to try different restaurants and go out for really nice meals. During the holidays though, we all make sure to have at least one home-cooked meal with everyone and just have a good time
Yes, distance can be a problem, but luckily for me my parents are just 20km away while my in-laws more or less 150kms, so it's not a big distance. This past weekend I ate at my in-laws on Saturday and on Sunday at my parents, so it was almost cooking free weekend and no expenses buying food lol, it's not the most important of course, but it does make a difference.
When I was in a 10 year relationship with my daughter's father, I did not eat at my mother in law's because she has Alzheimer's disease and some of the meat in her dishes smelled really evil because she would forget that she left it sitting out to go bad. She would also sometimes forget that she left the stove on.
That's really terrible ACSAPA, in that case she would be in need to eat at your place and not you eating in hers. Fortunately my parents don't have any of those incapacitating diseases and they are still rather fit despite some age, so I feel fortunate that I can share this time with them, I know it won't be many more years.
