I will always hear women talk about how much they spend at a beauty salon/hairdresser, not so much from men. I myself will never be able to ask this question of myself because I choose to do it myself rather than done professionally. Depending on how often you make appointments in a year's time, how much do you believe you would save? Would you continue, distance your visits, or maybe try it on your own?
I personally enjoy being pampered at hair and beauty salons, so no I still prefer to go, providing I have the money. I also prefer to have a qualified professional handle my hair and skin treatments. Of course there are things like washing my own hair and doing some skin treatments myself like masks, that I do at home. But I think that things like having my hair relaxed and treated (I have frizzy Afro hair) are best left to a trained professional as I would never be able to do it to the standard I like to keep it at. There are also specialist skin treatments that I believe are best administered by a trained beautician or dermatologist.
For the most part I do my hair myself as well. As you said it does save money and also I don't have the hassle of going to a salon. In the past I had a good friend who was a beautician who actually would come to our home to do our hair. But over time we lost contact with her I am sorry to say and haven't seen her in awhile. I don't even know if she is sitll in our area or not and still working at the salon she was at years ago. This has been so scrap lately that I couldn't afford to have her cut my hair or color it even if I did know where she was at this point.
I cut my own hair as well, following the Lee Stafford method. It works quite well, but you do need to make sure you are using decent hairdressing scissors. Everyday kitchen scissors will ruin your efforts. I've put a link to the instructions below. Log In
I worry too much to cut my own hair. I would probably mess it up given I am not close to being a stylist. I can hardly style my hair with a curling iron and hair products. Still, I did quit going to a salon, saving myself about $30 per hair cut. A family friend comes to the house now. She's a hair dresser and charges only $10. On top of that, she's very generous with giving away any hair products.
I've been my own stylist for years and have at times threatened to fire myself, but have persevered and usually am satisfied with how I look. I also do my husband's hair and get no complaints there, either. It used to be that I would go somewhere and get my hair cut or trimmed and almost every time I'd walk out the door at least a little irritated because they would cut off way more than I asked them to. Or they would give me layers or some such I did not want. So even though I may occasionally be not quite satisfied with something I've done, I'm still more satisfied than I would be if I went somewhere and walked out cut too short again and having to pay for it.
I love my hairstylist, and I know there's no way I'd be happy with my own work. I continue to go even though it is an expense. My visits just have to be spread out because of the cost. I choose easy care styles that have a little room to grow without looking too bad. However, my husband has let me cut his hair for years. His barber was just using clippers anyway, so we figured we'd give it a shot. After several years, the Wahl kit could probably stand to be replaced, but it paid for itself in the first two haircuts. I see they have a cordless model now, I'm sure my husband would appreciate not being hit in the face with the cord!
I have been doing my own hair since I was twelve, so no I never think about that. I have had mostly dissatisfying salon visits in the past, and it's just not worth it to me. I have long hair that is not chemically treated and I prefer to deal with it myself.
I don't trust myself to drastically cut my own hair, but I give myself trims once every couple of months. Though last time I got a hair cut (which was about a month ago) I actually went to Supercuts and got my hair cut for like $15! And it came out great! Considering I've spent much more than that in the past and it still looked great, I'm definitely gonna save the money and go there from now on.
I don't know how Black women here feel; but in my opinion Black hair takes a lot more effort to maintain, especially if it's been chemically treated. It's a nightmare! This is the main reason why I prefer to have someone who knows what they are doing, handle it. I also like to have highlights put in, and I do believe a salon processed dye job always looks better than a home job. I can always tell the difference, too. I try to save money by spacing out my visits as the best hairdresser in town also happens to work for a posh and very pricey hair salon Whatever I can do, I'll do myself. But if I could afford it, I'd do go to my hairdresser for everything because he truly is a master at what he does and each time I go to that salon, I feel absolutely pampered
Of course I do. Still, you can't help but take a trip to the salon every few months. When you have a curly hair like mine and no one in your family has a talent for cutting hair (or beautifying a person in general), then it's inevitable to go to the salon and spare a few dollars to get your hair fixed. I can do my own manicure, but I certainly don't know how to remove pesky ingrown nails.
Oh gawd, I've been doing my hair forever now. Not to save money, though that's a bonus.. but because whenever I went, I hated my hair. And I tried many salons. Hhhhhated my hair. Now I love it. It's not as hard as most people would think. I can't imagine how much I'd be spending if I were still going.
I used to go to the barbers every two weeks to have my head shaved at £20 a go. A couple of years ago I bought an electric shaver thingy and now my sister does it for me. I save over £500 a year now. I used to also get a shave once a week at £10 a time but none of them could do a better job than I could do at home due to the time they spend on each client so I knocked that on the head as well.
My husband bought one of those funky Babyliss hair trimming machines from Boots to try to save money by cutting his own hair at home. It's got a circular head, and looks easy enough for anyone to use. I was even going to learn so as to help him. We had to chuck it in the end because it was absolutely rubbish!
I've only been to a beauty salon a few times ever. I usually do my own hair, because I don't trust people to give me the results I want. Besides, now-a-days there are so many tutorials on YouTube showing a person how to do their own hair, I use that as a resource.
Yes, that's why I only go there when I really need to, and that's when I could no longer bear the annoyance that my long hair is giving me, the hassle and the inconvenience. Having your hair done is quite costly, so unless that you have that much money, you wouldn't want to have your hair done in such a way that you only do it for fun.
I used to have my hair cut in the salon twice per year, but now I go to the "lower class" or cheap salons when I need a haircut. Sometimes I also just trim my hair, and I think it's good enough for me, eventhough it's not as good as how the stylists do it. At least it's trimmed, and that's what matters.
