Do you adhere to sell by dates or do you use them as a rough guideline?

Sell by dates were introduce in the 1970's by Marks and Spencer. The labels were a guide for both the consumer and the retailer to know how long to keep produce for. But as a result of this, a lot of food gets thrown away when it is still perfectly fine to eat. I myself for a long time have been guilty of this I check the date its gone past, I automatically assumed its off without thinking and then I bin it.

But have come to realise that its a massive waste and there's actually no need most of the time. I still try to eat food before its sell by date but am not as hasty to do away with it once the date has past. However something in the back of my mind is always saying even though its absolutely fine perhaps its not ok. All because of a stupid label.

    What are your thought?
