What really is Christmas now that it is just around the corner?This is a time christians celebrate the birthday of their Messiah.It is a time to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the savior of the world.Many people do not even know what Christmas is and why they celebrate it. For some people, this is the time they take leave from work, go for vacations, expect to be given gifts and many other reasons.Why do you celebrate Christmas or what is your understanding?
I celebrate Christmas to remember the birth of Jesus Christ but we have done that for so long. If keep repeating something over and over again it loses its meaning not forgetting that you have to spend extra money because it's Christmas. The positive part is that you get a day off which sometimes is hard to come by. That's why we sometimes don't mind what we are celebrating so long you won't have to go to work.
Even though I am not a Christian by birth I have a lot of friends who are Christians. During Christmas I join them in the celebrations. We decorate our houses and surroundings with colorful bulbs and stars. As already mentioned above we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. As OP has rightly pointed as in the case of all other festivals Christmas is also losing its charm as nowadays people hardly got any time for celebrations. But kids are the ones who really enjoy during Christmas and they believe that Santa Clause will visit them with surprise gifts. That is really a good feeling.
Christmas is big business because a lot of people are buying presents. In fact, a business could be dead all year and then explode at Christmas leading to more hiring and enough cash for a business to go another year, repeating the same cycle. In fact, it would be interesting to see how much money stores make during Christmas to the income they make on other days. It's sort of like the tourist business. For instance, a city near my home, Bristol Tennessee USA, has a huge car racing track. Therefore, when races come to town motels and restaurants are booked. In fact, the income just from the races could be enough to sustain the businesses even if nobody during other times.
I don't think any Christians would not know what exactly Christmas is(there might be some exceptions though). A Christian knows what Christmas is. However, the true meaning of religious festival like Christmas has been lost in the today's consumerist societies. These days religious festivals are just a time to celebrate with food and drinks.
Christians know what christmas is but I think mainly retailers have ruined the proper and real christmas feel. I'm not sure if it is just me but christmas just doesn't feel as special as it used to. I feel that because shops and companies start advertising and preparing for christmas in around october, by the time it gets to december the christmas spirit is just not there and you get tired and bored of it.
My understanding ofv Christmas is that it's a day that has been set aside to mark the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It's a day for Christians to make merry and be happy that our Savior has been born. To mark this great event workers are normally given days off and schools get holiday. This celebration has been on going for many years.
I agree! Now it is all about Christmas discount sales and the mad rush you see in the various shopping malls and hotels everywhere. Even the online shopping sites are booming with great discount sales. Last year, my Christian friend told me how holiday makers simply thronged the streets and many of them walked in and out from her church, chattering loudly, even while the service was going on. They simply couldn't even respect the fact that there was a priest inside giving a sermon to his congregation! It was so weird and ridiculous!
I think many of us tend to forget the real reason behind the celebrations but I do try to remember why we are buying each other gifts even though I am not a very religious person. It's become very commercialised over the years especially where children are concerned. They all seem to be competing with each other as to who has the biggest and best present. It's not good really.
I think you can celebrate Christmas in many ways, but I like a lot of the old fashion things about Christmas-and especially when you get older and start looking back on the Christmases of past. I like a lot of the old Christmas customs and traditions myself- like the Christmas choirs and maybe enjoying some wine and a good meal, and even watching them(choirs) on TV as well. I think the traditions of the different countries are fun to get some good ideas from, and you could adopt a few of them for your Christmas as well.
