There are times when you need to get from Point A to Point B and you learn that the plane tickets are insanely expensive, so you research and discover that taking a plane from Point A to Point C, then from Point C to Point B is way cheaper, but it takes a lot more time. What would you choose ? Comodity or fair prices ?
I'm not a fan of those 28 hours flights-and-transits combo, especially when a normal direct flight takes six hours, but I have taken 15 hours journey to go from Munich to Montreal. It was much, much cheaper. I really don't mind -- I like having the time to read and write and just travelling. Of course, this can only be done if the schedule allows it, but I usually don't travel on tight schedules!
We usually go for quality guarantee over price. For e.g. when airlines mix up we are nervous about our luggage. But for our next trip home our funds are limited because we are going to celebrate one of our parents 50th wedding anniversary and the other siblings want to take an Alaskan cruise. We are going to try to find the cheapest way home. So I hope more people post on this because I will be looking up all the websites they give. I'm even looking into boat travel although it will suck up all our vacation days.
It depends on your budget and your time constraints. If the price difference is considerable and the time difference was only a few hours than I would go for price. However, if the time difference and interchanges are too long then I would have to rethink things if it was overnight. I like an adventure and have changed planes on flights multiple times, but it can be exhausting going though security all the time.
I'm not going to complain about spending a few more dollars to save on multiple hours of flying. I see no point in doing so, even when you want to save some money. There's a point at which saving money requires doing something that's too inconvenient to even consider. I'd say that this is one of those situations for most normal people and travelers.
It all depends, if the flight is extremely cheap, I will always be tempted to go in that direction. Most of my flights are only a few hours so I will take a flight that is less comfortable to save money.
I only take the longer route if it offers a significant saving. The saving needs to be proportionate to the extra time, so for example, I'd take an hour longer for a £30 saving but for a 15 hour delay, I'd want to be saving around £150 at least. Sometimes, doing this is worth it but not very often.
