We are on a site to save money and I am not a gambler at all, but I do have some friends that make small bets online and they manage to earn a few dollars. This really makes me want to try it, but at the same time I suppose that they don't win all the time and that they do lose as well. What do you think, is it worth it to make small bets online or this is risky business you don't want to relate to?

People are not necessarily betting just to make extra money and profit. Obviously it's the biggest factor, but it's also about enjoyment too.

I spend about £10 a week on bets, wining and losing, but I'm not too fussed because it's good fun and a bit of thrill.

I agree, we can bet online because we enjoy doing it, but also as a source of money. Surely there is always a risk involved, so nothing like betting in something were the stakes are not high, but at least you will win something. If you go betting on high stakes you might just win, but most likely you will lose and lose. I always go for what safe or in alternative a really low bet with high odds.

Matched betting and arbitrage betting are the only two guaranteed ways of making money. If you can determine 'values bets' would might be able to make money long term, but the former two are the only methods I've used.

Matched betting is where you use free introductory money to bet on every outcome, guaranteeing a win. Arbitrage betting is using different bookmakers odds to bet on every outcome and guarantee a profit.

Betfair and Betdaq are the best 2 websites for the above, although a few more are popping up over time. Check out OddsMonkey too.

Thanks for the tips Hedonologist, sometimes earning some money online is the best way to save some money, but I am still in doubt. My friend bets on bet365 (if I am not mistaken) and just yesterday he lost some money because after all it is a bet. You do get the same value of money that you enter with when you sign in so you seem to have an immediate profit just for joining...

I finally joined bet365 and I didn't like the experience, beware, it is gambling and you will pay full!!! It's a dangerous and addicting game and in click or two you can lose you hard earned money, I put in a symbolic amount, but I won't return there... ;)

I do a little betting online, nothing substantial, but it makes games more interesting to watch if I have something at stake.
@Gelsemium: never put up more in a bet than you are willing to lose, otherwise it's very dangerous, it's not for everyone as you need to be very controlled and not have an addictive personality.

I do not gamble but lets say mostly everything a person does is a gamble. Sometimes you might find the site attractive and the odds of winning are very high so you end up betting. I try as much as possible not to get into betting since when you start it is not easy to stop.

Well, I was a gambler for 3 days and lost is all lol. My friend keeps gambling minor money, but he's losing it slowly so it's really something we do because we like it, not to make money IMO.

I used to gamble my money online too, but using a different method, via those HYIP sites. During those days, in my quest to make quick money as possible, I gambled as much as $55, but the admin didn't pay me. When it comes to HYIP sites, you're most likely to get paid if you gambled only small amount. Now I should know better not to trust HYIP sites. Anyway, maybe when the amount is small then I just might gamble again one day for the sake of fun.

OK, never heard about HYIP sites. I just googled it and it's High-Yield Investment Program, can you tell me some more how this works and why do you consider it gambling? It seems like an investment program... associated with frauds?

I have never really been able to make money out of gambling offline and so the thought of taking it online is not so appealing to me. I think that it would be safe to say that it is something that i would not eagerly do and at the same time i would consider it to be a really big risk and i dont think that it would be worth my time.

So that's spot on lovemwaf, you don't make money betting online and if you do you're probably the exception and not the rule. Some do it for fun while slowly losing some money, but that's not exactly my notion of fun, I lost a few dollars and that was it, no more for me.

That's how betting goes. There's a 50-50 chance of either winning or losing your money. The odds however, most of the time are never in your favor.

Because of that, unless you have some money to waste, you should never try to place a bet on anything. I've heard that sometimes when you begin betting you could start off with a few wins. The purpose for that is to suck you in so you can place more money on bets and once you do, you lose it all.

I don't think we have a serious 50% chance of winning, well, it depends on what we are betting on. Either cases, I believe in hard work and to get paid for it, so the hypothesis of losing something out of pure luck doesn't please me at all, after all I had work to earn that money.

That's really not how probability works :D
Anyway, if you are betting on something like sporting events, it's completely independent of whether you place a bet or not.
I think you are confusing betting with gambling on something like online poker or blackjack.

Gambling is gambling is mate, doesn't matter if online or not, you will still lose your money 99% of the time. And by the sound of it, you're not that familiar when it comes to gambling so I suggest you make observations and do some Google-ing first before you try it out. Betting a few dollars might not be that big of a deal, but you have to consider that this is online, you'll never know if its legit or not, I mean, there are a lot of scam gambling sites out there and believe me it is easy to make one. If you want to try it go ahead, spend a few dollars first, do some research and be smart and avoid shady looking gambling sites.

Come on, 99% of the time? Well, in my case it was 100% because I lost it all and my friend that know more about it is losing it all too slowly. Bet365 for example is a UK company that is spread all over the world, so guess where they've been getting their money from? From us!!

You are less likely than the house to win of course, that's how that entire industry works, you also have a lower chance of winning in casino games, like Gelsemium says, that's how those companies keep in business and keep turning a profit.
